MIIT said the number of newly added phone users hit 30 million in the period, bringing the total number to over 1 billion. The total number of mobile phone users increased by 37.6 million in the period from Jan. to Apr and reached 679 million. The number of broadband users in the country increased by 6.4 million and reached 89.8 million.

Fixed-asset investment in the sector grew 16.9% from a year earlier to hit RMB 64.78 billion, mainly due to the network requirements of the new 3G technology, according to the ministry.

The ministry also said the penetration rate of mobile phones in the country had exceeded 50% by the end of April.

In addition, China’s software industry revenues jumped 23.5% year on year to RMB 255.2 billion in the first four months of 2009. Software products revenue increased 22.4% from a year earlier to RMB 64.6 million. Software exports in the period surged 48.2% year on year to US$4.93 billion, according to ministry figures.
